Big Bluestem

Andropogon gerardii

Big Bluestem is a perennial, warm-season grass that occurs across North America, from the shortgrass prairie east to the Atlantic Ocean. It grows 3 to 6 feet tall, with a bunchy or sod-forming habit and reddish-purple leaves at maturity. Notorious for its “turkey track”-like, branched inflorescence, and as an indicator species of good range management. Used for forage, pasture, hay, wildlife habitat, and as an attractive ornamental or landscaping species.
