Greenthread is a winter annual, or short-lived perennial, is often found growing in colonies. It can grow anywhere between 1 and 3 feet tall. The common name Greenthread, refers to the thread-like appearance of the foliage. Many butterflies feed on this nectar plant that blooms profusely from April to June. Highly deer resistant. Prefers disturbed sites in dry, sandy or gravelly soil in higher elevations, mountains, various vegetative communities, disturbed areas, from 4,000 to 7,000 feet.
