Radish
Raphanus sativus
Radish is a cool-season, annual forb with a notable taproot. While it is generally native to Southeast Asia, its origin is uncertain, and it was domesticated independently in India, Central Asia, and North Africa. It generally grows low, below 1.5 feet in height, with few lobed leaves and a clumpy habit. The fleshy, edible taproot (called ‘the radish’) can be variously sized, from 0.5 inches to over 6 feet in length, with a similar range in width and weight, and can present any color from white to black. In addition to production as a food crop, it is a prized cover crop species, because it provides soil cover, suppresses weeds, and alleviates soil compaction under almost any mix of site conditions.
