Small Fruited Bulrush
Scirpus microcarpus
Small-Fruited Bulrush is a cool season, native perennial that is strongly rhizomatous. It occurs in wet, low areas, from lowlands to moderate elevations in mountains. In the Intermountain West, it is most frequently found between 5,000-7,000 ft. elevation. Small-Fruited Bulrush is a vigorous grower in sloughs, streambanks, and disturbed sites such as ditches and wet clearings. This species likes to be wet year-round, although the soil may be dry at the surface during drought. It may tolerate some shade, but will grow less vigorously. It provides valuable food and nesting material for wildlife, as well as excellent cover. It grows in freshwater wetlands only.
