Western Wheatgrass
Pascopyrum smithii
Western Wheatgrass is a cool-season, perennial sod forming grass that is native to much of North America. It is one of the most widespread and important grass species, growing from Durango, Mexico to Alaska. It grows 1 to 3 feet tall, with fine, blueish-green leaves and abundant roots and rhizomes. Likes fine-textured, fertile soil, but can grow under a wide variety of cool conditions. Used for pasture, forage, hay, roadsides, erosion control, and for mine reclamation.
