Switchgrass
Panicum virgatum
Switchgrass is a perennial, warm-season grass sod forming grass that is native to much of North America. Prior to European settlement, it grew widely across Midwestern US, and was the primary species of the tallgrass prairie. It grows in a clumpy form from 3 to 9 feet tall, with light blue-green leaf blades, and an open panicle seed head. Best adapted to overflow sites with moderate water tables. Used for pasture, forage, hay, wildlife feed, and reclamation. Seeds were an emergency food source for Plains native peoples.
